I Was Looking For Something Specific In My Prophetic Word

I love the that we are ministering in all 50 states and in many nations of the world. My wife Kathy and daughter Charity minister to many people each month both online and in meetings in the Northeast and Mid Atlantic. The feedback we get is incredible to me. We are so blessed to hear over and again how life transforming their ministry was to those who received a prophetic word.

Occasionally I have had a person tell me that they felt that their prophetic word was general and applied to anyone. This is by no means the opinion of about 98-99% of the people who receive prophetic ministry from us. When I would listen to the word this person received I did not arrive at the same conclusion of being general or applying to anyone. Their word was very specific and addressed a number of areas in their life and many times even a calling on that persons life.

I have found that sometimes a person is listening to a prophetic word listening for one thing that they are searching for and they miss or dismiss all of what God wanted to say to them. I am not saying that we cannot miss God, that would be foolish. We are not infallible. What I am saying is that many times a person can be looking for an answer from God and approach God thinking they know what they need to hear. God many times will answer questions that they may not be asking. We need to be careful before we dismiss something as not being God or a word from the Lord.

Another hindrance can be not seeing what God sees in you. God sees and calls forth things in us that we and others may not see in us. He believes in us. He calls forth those things that are not as though they were. He is many times tugging on the destiny within us that we may not even be aware of. There was one woman who we ministered to about working with babies. The word was much more specific than that but at the time she felt we missed it. She even had others listen to the word and they agreed that we missed it. A couple years later she began working at a different location and found herself working with at risk babies and loving it. It was then that the word came back to her. She realized she was doing exactly what the word described her doing and that this was what she was destined to do and that she found it so fulfilling. She was so thrilled to know that she was in the will of God and loving it.

Many times the Kings in the Old Testament were looking for a specific word and when the prophet gave them the word of the Lord, they dismissed it and asked for another prophet to speak to them. They wanted to hear something specific and when God didn’t tell them what they wanted to hear, they went to another. God had already spoken what He knew the King needed to hear. I am not saying to receive all prophetic words as infallible. I am saying to carefully evaluate whether God is addressing areas in your life you didn’t expect or anticipate.

One last thing to consider. Did God bring a gentle correction to us? Did He call us up higher and we became offended at the suggestion or wording used? Did God suggest I had room to grow? Seems funny that we could be offended in this way, but I myself have been tempted to be offended when God suggests that I have room to grow. I quickly recognize it as pride and immaturity and open myself up to His challenge and adjusting in my life and I am the better for it.

I have found the best posture in receiving a word from the Lord is to come to Him and give Him permission to speak into any area of my life. I ask Him to determine what are the most pressing things I need to hear and act on. We purposefully ask people not to tell us anything about them or their lives other than their name and if they are male or female. The reason we do this is so that the person receiving knows that what was spoken over them was not as the result of prior knowledge. It is a pure word. Some people sarcastically ask, “If you are a true prophet, why do you need to know whether I am a male or female” to which I reply, “We know in part and we prophesy in part”.

I don’t know if any of the above applies to you. What I do know is that God may be wanting to speak to us and we may be cutting Him off because of our preconceived notions of what He will or should say. Just a thought!
